LUTOSŁAWSKI YEAR

A COMMISSION FROM LONDON
I was called by the then director of Chester Music, who told me: ‘Look, I have a commission for you for a
cello concerto from the Royal Philharmonic Society.' It's one such very respectable organisation whose membership is reserved for professional musicians, set up in the 1870s... The Concerto was then written as a commission from the Royal Philharmonic Society, which granted me a medal in 1986, and first performed in London.
